About the club

In the World Cup qualifiers of 1974, East Germany, in its first and only world-wide, was drawn in the same group that was the host country of the tournament, West Germany. On June 22, the two teams would have to face the Volksparkstadium stadium at the People's Park in Hamburg. In the first half, West Germany had two incredible chances. First, with Grabowski, who was barred by the agility of goalkeeper Croy. Then with Breitner, who hit the crossbar. In the second half, East Germany had another opportunity, with Kreische who kicked out a cross from the left. At 23 minutes of the second half, the story was written. The East German Jürgen Sparwasser received in the middle of three defenders, entered the area and scored the goal that opened the scoring in the historic confrontation. It was also the goal of East Germany's victory over favorite West German hosts in the only match in history between the two teams.
