In the first round of the 1974 World Cup, Poland beat Argentina 3-2, drew 1-1 with Italy and thrashed Haiti 4-1. In the second round they won from Sweden 1-0 and Yugoslavia 2 A 1. It was not until the final because it lost to Breitner's West Germany by a meager 1 to 0. In the dispute for the third place, beat Brazil, who had just been three-times world champion, by 1 to 0.
